Breakthrough in HIV Research

Saturday, July 10

In the latest developments of HIV Research, Scientist have found three new powerful antibodies that neutralizes 91% of HIV strains, more than any AIDS antibody discovered to date.

The HIV antibodies were discovered in the cells of a 60-year-old African-American gay man, known in the scientific literature as Donor 45, whose body made the antibodies naturally.  The trick for scientists now is to develop a vaccine or other methods to make anyone's body produce them as well

Finding antibodies to combat the AIDS virus has been one of the most perplexing questions for scientists.  It is very hard for people to naturally generate these antibodies. Before the body is able to build up a formidable immune response the virus has already replicated and infected the individual.

This breakthrough is very important because it gives scientist an opportunity to replicate and create a new vaccine that is able to kill off a larger number of HIV strains.  Just think if you could go get the HIV vaccine and already have an immune response built up against the virus before you contract it.  Of course this is far from being realized and there is still more work to be done, but this does give me hope that maybe one day we can find a cure for this disease.
